About GEOPOL.UK¶
GEOPOL.UK is an independent geopolitical reference publication. Our aim is straightforward: to build the most rigorous, clearly written encyclopaedia of geopolitical concepts, regions, and strategic theory available online.
What We Cover¶
Geopolitics is the study of how geography shapes power — how the physical world of oceans, mountains, rivers, and resources conditions the behaviour of states, the formation of alliances, and the course of conflict. We cover:
- Foundational concepts — heartland theory, sea power, balance of power, buffer states, strategic depth, and the intellectual traditions behind them
- Regions and chokepoints — the Suez Canal, the Strait of Hormuz, the Black Sea, the Arctic, and the territories whose geography has determined history
- Thinkers and strategists — Mackinder, Mahan, Spykman, Brzezinski, Kissinger, and those who built the analytical frameworks still used today
- Historical case studies — the geopolitical logic behind major conflicts, alliances, and power transitions from the nineteenth century to the present
